10 Inspiring Elisabeth Elliot Quotes

Elisabeth Elliot died on June 15, 2015. Most people know her as an author and speaker as she masterfully told the story of her husband’s (Jim Elliot) martyrdom in Ecuador while trying to share the hope of Jesus Christ with the Auca people.

Her example of faith extended beyond telling a story to also include returning to the Auca after her husband’s death to forgive the Auca and pursue reconciliation with them as an expression of the transformation of her heart by the Gospel. If you would like to read more about the story of this experience, read “Shadow of the Almighty: The Life and Testament of Jim Elliot (Lives of Faith)” or “Through Gates of Splendor.”

Few of us can imagine forgiving someone who murdered someone we know, much less someone who murdered our spouse. But Elisabeth Elliot did that and she did it well. She is one of the heroes of the Christian faith but I’m sure she would have said that she is no hero…just a servant of the true hero; Jesus Christ.

Although this quote is not technically from Elisabeth Elliot, it is by her husband and written about by her, this Elisabeth Elliot quote does typify her life and should be included with the list:

“He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose.” (quoting her husband Jim Elliot in “In The Shadow of the Almighty“)

As you read these Elisabeth Elliot quotes, may you accept the challenge to live sacrificially, in forgiveness of those who hurt you, and in love of all people you know; not because you want something from them or because you are good, but because you are choosing to give up what you cannot keep for the the one you cannot lose, Jesus Christ.
